Brown Sea Island Cotton
A heritage cotton species producing exceptionally long, silky fibres with a natural sheen. Native to South America and the Caribbean, it belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae), related to hibiscus and okra. Sea Island cotton was once prized for the world’s finest textiles and remains a rare heirloom variety, valued for both its beauty and resilience. This selection produces naturally brown cotton, offering a unique alternative to conventional white cotton and reducing the need for dyes. Attractive yellow flowers with dark centres are followed by decorative seed pods that split open to reveal the soft fibre within. Thrives in warm to hot climates with full sun and well-drained soil and can be grown as an annual in cooler regions.
Approximately 12 seeds per packet
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: September to February
Subtropics: September to January
Mild climates: Spring to early summer
Cold climates: Late spring after frost has passed
Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly or raise seedlings in trays once soil temperatures are consistently warm. Plant 10–15mm deep in fertile, well-drained soil in a full sun position. Keep soil evenly moist during germination and early growth. Cotton prefers warm conditions throughout the growing season and benefits from regular watering during flowering and boll development. Allow bolls to fully mature and open on the plant before harvesting fibre. Approximately 140–180 days to harvest depending on climate.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
We cannot send to WA.
