Podocarpus elatus (Plum Pine / Illawarra Plum)

A hardy and attractive Australian native rainforest tree valued for its edible fruit, handsome foliage and high-quality timber. Naturally occurring in coastal rainforests of eastern Australia, Plum Pine is a slow-growing, long-lived species that develops into an elegant small to medium-sized tree. Glossy dark green leaves and a dense growth habit make it an excellent feature or shade tree for larger gardens and native landscapes.

The fleshy purple fruit is edible when ripe and has traditionally been enjoyed fresh or used in jams, sauces and preserves. The timber is highly regarded for its durability and attractive appearance. Adaptable and resilient once established, Illawarra Plum performs best in well-drained soils with reliable moisture and protection from severe frost when young.

Approximately 5 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring and summer
Mild climates: Spring and early autumn
Cold climates: Spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed into a quality, free-draining seed raising mix and lightly cover. Keep consistently moist and warm during germination, which may be slow and irregular. Position in a sheltered location with filtered light or part shade. Transplant carefully once seedlings are established and plant into fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment. Slow growing but long lived and rewarding with time. Trees may take several years to begin fruiting.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
