Santalum acuminatum

Also known as Native Peach, Quandong is one of Australia's most celebrated bushfoods and is now the focus of increasing commercial production, particularly in South Australia. This attractive native small tree produces vibrant red fruit with a distinctive sweet-tart flavour that has long been valued by Aboriginal peoples. The fruit is especially popular in jams, chutneys, sauces, pies and desserts and is rich in vitamin C.

Naturally adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, Quandong is particularly well suited to drier regions and poor soils where many fruit trees struggle. As a semi-parasitic plant, it forms beneficial relationships with the roots of neighbouring plants and requires a suitable host species such as hakea, acacia or other compatible natives for long-term success. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and rewarding to grow.

Planting / Sowing
Seeds can be sown directly into their final position and may take many months to germinate. For faster and more reliable germination, carefully crack the hard seed shell without damaging the seed inside. Sow into a free-draining seed raising mix and keep lightly moist. Quandong requires a suitable host plant such as hakea, acacia or other compatible native species growing nearby. Plant in full sun with excellent drainage. Growth is relatively slow at first while the host relationship develops.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
