Chamaecytisus palmensis

A highly productive, fast-growing fodder tree often described as the temperate-climate equivalent of leucaena. Growing to approximately 5 metres in height, Tagasaste is valued for its protein-rich foliage, making it an excellent stock feed for a wide range of livestock. The masses of fragrant white flowers produced through winter and spring provide an important food source for bees and other pollinators when few other plants are flowering.

Well suited to windbreaks, shelter belts, forage systems and regenerative farming projects, Tree Lucerne thrives in well-drained soils and is remarkably tolerant of both drought and frost once established. Its dense growth habit also makes it an effective fire-resistant hedge. As a legume, it contributes nitrogen to the soil and can play an important role in improving soil fertility and supporting surrounding plantings.

Planting / Sowing
Scarify seed prior to sowing by pouring hot (not boiling) water over seed and allowing it to soak overnight. Sow 1–2cm deep, placing two seeds per tray cell or pot. Keep in a shaded position and lightly watered during germination, which may take up to 30 days. Rhizobium inoculants may be applied once the first true leaves appear. Seedlings are generally ready for transplanting within 4–6 months. Harden plants off in full sun for several weeks before planting out. Space plants approximately 2 metres apart with rows 2 metres apart. Average time to maturity is 18–24 months from transplanting.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
