A productive broad bean variety bred for reliable yields and large, well filled pods. ‘Big Ben’ produces plump beans with a mild, nutty flavour, suitable for eating fresh or allowing to mature for drying. Well adapted to cool season growing, it performs strongly through winter and spring and tolerates frost once established. Plants are robust and upright, making them well suited to home gardens and small scale production.
Approximately 15 seeds per packet
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: April to June
Subtropics: March to July
Mild climates: February to August
Cold climates: late summer through spring
Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well drained soil in full sun. Sow seed 5 to 7 cm deep and space plants 20 to 25 cm apart, with rows 60 to 75 cm apart. Broad beans prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil and moderate fertility. Avoid excessive manure, which can promote leafy growth over pod production. In warmer areas, pinching out the growing tips after flowering begins can improve pod set. Plants may benefit from light support as they grow and mature.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.

Flower seeds: As fellow gardening enthusiasts we share the love for planting and nurturing our own flowers in addition to our veggie gardens. Our carefully selected range of flower seeds, available for convenient online purchase, holds a special place in our hearts. Like the endangered vegetables we've championed, these flower varieties face the risk of vanishing forever. Some of these older strains are incredibly rare, and it's a source of immense pride for us to offer and deliver these precious flower seeds Australia-wide.
