A compact broad bean variety producing heavy crops of long pods reaching up to 20 cm. ‘Coles Dwarf’ forms a shorter, sturdier plant than many traditional broad beans, making it well suited to smaller gardens and exposed sites. Beans have a good, full flavour and can be eaten fresh or allowed to mature for drying. A reliable cool season crop that performs well through winter and spring and tolerates frost once established.
Approximately 40 seeds per packet
Seed count: approximately 1 seed per gram
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: April to June
Subtropics: March to July
Mild climates: February to August
Cold climates: late summer through spring
Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well drained soil in full sun. Sow seed 5 to 7 cm deep and space plants 20 to 25 cm apart, with rows 60 to 75 cm apart. Broad beans prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil and moderate fertility. Avoid excessive manure, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of pods. In warmer areas, pinching out the growing tips after flowering begins can help improve pod set.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
