Beta vulgaris

Red Mammoth, often known as Mangel Beet or Fodder Beet, is a traditional variety grown for both human consumption and animal feed. Producing large, elongated pointed roots with attractive red-tinted flesh, this vigorous beet is highly productive and well suited to gardeners wanting a dual-purpose crop.

The young leafy tops can be harvested and used as nutritious greens, either fresh or cooked like silverbeet. As the plants mature, the roots develop into large, sweet beets suitable for roasting, soups, stews and storage. Their substantial size and high yields have also made them a popular fodder crop for livestock for generations.

Mangels have a long agricultural history throughout Europe and Australia, where they were traditionally grown to provide valuable winter feed for cattle, sheep and pigs. Red Mammoth combines this productive heritage with excellent garden performance, making it an interesting and useful addition to the home vegetable patch.

Planting / Sowing

For baby leaf production, sow seed densely in trays, boxes or garden beds and harvest leaves when they reach 8–15 cm tall. For mature roots, sow seed directly into prepared soil 15–20 mm deep and thin seedlings to 20–30 cm apart to allow room for the large roots to develop.

Grow in full sun in fertile, deeply cultivated soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. Maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Harvest young leaves as required and lift roots once they have reached the desired size.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
