Daucus carota subsp. sativus

Solar Yellow is a beautiful yellow Carrot with ancestry tracing back to the old yellow-rooted carrots cultivated throughout the Middle East and Central Asia for centuries. Long before orange became the dominant colour of cultivated carrots, yellow varieties formed an important part of the crop’s remarkable diversity.

Producing succulent golden-yellow roots to approximately 20 cm long, Solar Yellow has an exceptionally sweet, mild flavour and crisp texture. The roots are excellent eaten fresh, grated into salads or juiced, and particularly good roasted, steamed or glazed. Cooking deepens the golden colour and brings out their natural sweetness.

Yellow carrots contain high levels of carotenoid pigments, particularly lutein, giving them both their characteristic colour and nutritional value. Combined with orange, red, purple and white varieties, Solar Yellow makes a spectacular mixed-colour carrot harvest.

Plants perform best in full sun with loose, friable, well-drained soil. Prepare the soil deeply and remove stones and other obstructions before sowing to encourage long, straight roots. Avoid fresh manure, which can cause roots to fork.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Most of the year, with best results autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 3–5 cm apart once established, using young thinnings as baby carrots. Maintain even moisture throughout root development to encourage sweet, tender and evenly shaped roots.

Harvest when roots reach approximately 20 cm long, or earlier for smaller, tender carrots.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
