Vigna unguiculata

Cow Pea is a vigorous, warm-season annual legume particularly well suited to tropical and subtropical conditions. Fast growing and tolerant of heat and dry conditions once established, it is a valuable multi-purpose crop for green manure, cover cropping, livestock forage and food production.

As a green manure, Cow Pea produces abundant leafy growth and helps protect bare soil, suppress weeds and add valuable organic matter. Like other legumes, it forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules, helping introduce biologically fixed nitrogen into the growing system. It makes an excellent warm-season rotation crop between vegetable plantings.

Cow Pea is also an edible crop. Young pods can be harvested and cooked as a vegetable, fresh peas can be shelled and eaten, and mature peas can be dried for storage and later cooking.

Approximately 50 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Late spring to summer
Cold climates: Late spring to early summer after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into warm, prepared soil approximately 20–30 mm deep. For larger green manure or forage plantings, sow at approximately 15–30 kg per hectare.

Grow in full sun in well-drained soil and keep moist during establishment. For green manure, cut plants before mature seed develops and leave as surface mulch or incorporate into the soil.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Cow Pea inoculant (Type I) where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Not available for TAS or WA due to quarantine restrictions.
