Solanum melongena

Thai Long Green is a productive Asian Eggplant producing slender, elongated fruits with attractive light green skin and tender white flesh. Fruits grow to approximately 25 cm long and remain narrow and elegant, making them quite different from the large, rounded purple eggplants commonly found in supermarkets.

The flesh is mild, tender and notably free from bitterness, with a delicious nutty flavour. Its fine texture and thin skin mean there is no need to peel the fruit before cooking. Thai Long Green is excellent in curries, stir-fries and soups, as well as grilled, roasted or braised. The flesh readily absorbs spices, sauces and aromatics while retaining its delicate flavour.

Long green eggplants are an important part of Southeast Asian cooking, where they are valued for their tender texture and ability to perform in hot, humid conditions. Thai Long Green is particularly well suited to warm Australian gardens and begins producing relatively early.

Plants thrive through warm weather in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Regular harvesting while the fruits are young, glossy and tender encourages continued flowering and production.

Approximately 50 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Most of the year, avoiding the coolest period
Subtropics: Late winter to summer
Mild climates: Spring to summer
Cold climates: Start indoors in late winter to spring and transplant after all danger of frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5 mm deep into trays or pots and keep warm and consistently moist. Eggplant germinates best with soil temperatures around 24–30°C.

Transplant seedlings once the weather and soil have warmed and all danger of frost has passed. Space plants approximately 50–60 cm apart in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil.

Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development. Harvest while fruits are approximately 20–25 cm long and the pale green skin remains smooth and glossy. Fruits can also be picked smaller for particularly tender flesh. Cut from the plant with secateurs rather than pulling.

Maturity: approximately 70 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
