Brassica juncea

Red Splendor is a striking Mustard Green producing large, deeply serrated leaves in a dramatic mixture of dark green and rich red to burgundy. Moderately frilled edges give the foliage additional texture, making it an attractive addition to both the vegetable garden and salad bowl.

The leaves have a pronounced hot, mustardy flavour that adds plenty of character to salads and mixed baby greens. Young leaves provide a tender texture with a lively peppery bite, while larger leaves can be steamed, sautéed, braised or added to stir-fries, soups and curries. Cooking mellows the heat considerably.

The red pigmentation becomes particularly vivid in good light and cooler weather. Combined with its slow-bolting habit, rapid growth and excellent colour, Red Splendor is particularly useful for baby-leaf production and repeated harvesting.

Mustard greens have been cultivated for thousands of years, particularly throughout Asia, where Brassica juncea has developed into an enormous diversity of leafy, stem and root vegetables. They are valued for their rapid growth, resilience and characteristic spicy flavour.

Red Splendor can be ready for baby-leaf harvesting in as little as three weeks, or allowed to mature into substantial full-sized plants. Regular harvesting of individual leaves encourages continued production.

Approximately 150 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring to autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5–10 mm deep directly into prepared soil or raise in trays for transplanting. Keep consistently moist during germination.

For baby-leaf production, sow relatively densely and begin cutting once leaves reach a useful size. For full-sized plants, thin or transplant to approximately 20–30 cm apart.

Grow in full sun for the strongest red colouring, although some afternoon shade can be beneficial as temperatures increase. Mustard greens prefer fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture for rapid, tender growth.

Harvest baby leaves from approximately 21 days or allow plants to mature for larger leaves. Leave the central growing point intact when harvesting individual leaves to encourage continued production.

If saving seed, Red Splendor can cross-pollinate with other Brassica juncea varieties flowering at the same time, so appropriate isolation is required to maintain the variety true to type.

Maturity: approximately 21 days for baby leaf; 45 days for full-sized plants.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
