Okra Star Of David Seeds

Star Of David is a distinctive old heirloom Okra producing exceptionally thick, deeply ribbed green pods that can reach approximately 15 cm long. Slice a pod crossways and its pronounced ribs form the star-shaped cross-section that gives this variety its memorable name.
For the best eating quality, harvest the pods young at around 7 cm long, while they are still tender and before the fibres begin to toughen. The substantial pods have excellent flavour and are delicious fried, grilled, roasted, pickled or added to curries, soups and stews. Okra is particularly famous as an ingredient in gumbo, where its natural mucilage helps thicken the dish.
Plants are impressive in their own right, growing up to approximately 2 m tall with attractive foliage marked by purple veins and large hibiscus-like flowers. Okra belongs to the mallow family, alongside hibiscus, rosella and cotton, and its ornamental flowers make it a handsome addition to productive gardens.
Okra has ancient origins in Africa, with Ethiopia and the surrounding region frequently associated with its early history. From Africa it spread through the Middle East, India and the Mediterranean before becoming an important vegetable throughout tropical and subtropical cuisines around the world.
A true warm-season crop, Star Of David thrives in heat and full sun. Plants are highly productive when pods are picked regularly, and frequent harvesting encourages continued flowering and fruit production.
Seed count: approximately 16 seeds/g
Approximately 20 seeds per packet
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Late spring to early summer
Cold climates: Start indoors in spring and transplant after all danger of frost
Planting / Sowing
Sow approximately 15–20 mm deep directly into warm, well-prepared soil after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler districts, seed can be started indoors to extend the growing season.
Space plants approximately 40–60 cm apart in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Keep consistently watered during establishment, flowering and pod development, although established plants cope well with hot conditions.
Harvest pods regularly when approximately 7 cm long for the most tender texture. Pods can grow considerably larger, but become increasingly fibrous as they mature. Check plants frequently during warm weather, as pods can grow remarkably quickly.
Allow pods to mature and dry completely on the plant when growing for seed.
Maturity: approximately 60–75 days.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
