Massey Gem is a reliable dwarf shelling Pea producing generous crops of sweet, tender green peas on compact plants reaching approximately 60–75 cm tall. Quick to mature, hardy and disease resistant, it has long been valued as both a home garden and market variety.
The well-filled pods grow approximately 3.5–5 cm long and contain sweet peas with excellent flavour. Enjoy them freshly shelled and lightly cooked, add to soups, stews, risottos and vegetable dishes, or blanch and freeze surplus peas for later use. Massey Gem is particularly well suited to freezing, retaining good flavour and texture.
Its compact growth makes it useful for smaller gardens and exposed sites where tall climbing peas can be difficult to manage. Although a dwarf bush type, plants still benefit from low support such as pea netting, stakes or twiggy branches to keep the crop upright and pods clear of the soil.
Massey Gem performs particularly well in cool conditions and is suitable for sowing from autumn through spring. Its combination of early maturity, hardiness and dependable cropping helped establish it as a popular traditional market-garden variety.
Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, with tender green peas becoming popular much later.
Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 130 seeds per packet

Planting / Sowing
Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.
Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart. Although Massey Gem is a dwarf variety, providing low support will help keep plants upright and make harvesting easier.
Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.
Harvest when pods are plump and well filled but while the peas remain tender and sweet. Pick regularly to encourage continued production. For seed saving, leave selected pods on healthy plants until fully mature and dry.
Maturity: approximately 70–80 days.
Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
