Pisum sativum

Purple Podded, also known as Capujiner, is a centuries-old heirloom Pea producing striking deep purple pods that contrast beautifully against green foliage. The vigorous climbing vines can reach approximately 1.5–2 m tall and make an impressive feature when grown over a trellis or other sturdy support.

Inside the colourful pods are plump green peas with a rich, traditional pea flavour. Harvest them young for shelling and eating fresh, or allow the peas to fully mature and dry for storing and later use in soups, stews and other slow-cooked dishes. The purple pods themselves become increasingly fibrous as they mature and are primarily valued for the peas within.

Capujiner peas have a particularly interesting history in the Netherlands, where old forms of this pea have been cultivated for centuries and are traditionally associated with Dutch monastic gardens. Known in Dutch as kapucijners, they became valued as a dependable dried pulse that could be stored through winter, while young peas could also be enjoyed fresh during the growing season.

This dual-purpose nature helped make Capujiner a useful staple crop for generations. Today it remains popular with heritage growers and seed savers for its history, distinctive colouring, flavour and ability to provide both a fresh and storable harvest.

Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, with tender green peas becoming popular much later.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to autumn
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Spring, with autumn sowing possible in suitable areas

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart and provide a strong trellis, netting or other support. Vines can reach approximately 1.5–2 m tall and will produce more effectively when allowed to climb freely.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.

Harvest pods while the peas inside are young and tender for fresh shelling. For dried peas, leave selected pods on the vines until fully mature and dry before shelling and storing.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
