Pisum sativum

Oregon Giant is a productive Snow Pea producing exceptionally large, broad, dark green edible pods with a crisp, tender texture and sweet flavour. Plants grow to approximately 1 m tall and provide generous harvests of substantial pods that are easy to spot and pick.

The entire young pod is eaten before the peas inside fully mature. Despite their impressive size, the pods remain tender when harvested young and are excellent eaten fresh in salads, sliced into wraps or quickly steamed or stir-fried. Brief cooking helps retain their characteristic sweetness and crunch.

Oregon Giant was developed as part of the Oregon State University pea-breeding program and was selected for its combination of large pods, good eating quality and useful disease resistance. It has resistance to powdery mildew as well as some resistance to root rot, making it a particularly dependable choice where these diseases can affect pea crops.

Plants reach around 1 m tall and benefit from pea netting, stakes or another low trellis. Regular harvesting encourages continued flowering and pod production and ensures the pods are picked at their sweetest and most tender stage.

Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, while edible-podded forms such as snow peas were selected for their tender pods and became important vegetables in many cuisines.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart and provide pea netting, stakes or another support. Plants reach approximately 1 m tall and are easier to harvest when supported.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas dislike waterlogged conditions, so ensure good drainage and maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.

Harvest the large pods while they are young, flat and tender, before the peas inside become fully swollen. Pick regularly to encourage continued production. For seed saving, leave selected pods on healthy plants until fully mature and dry.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
