Pisum sativum

Bush Sugarsnap is a compact, early-producing Pea grown for its sweet, crisp, completely edible pods. Unlike traditional shelling peas or flat snow peas, sugarsnaps are harvested once the pods have filled out, giving them their characteristic juicy crunch and plump appearance.

The stringless pods grow to approximately 7.5 cm long and have an exceptionally sweet, fresh pea flavour. Eat them straight from the garden, slice into salads or serve with dips, or lightly steam or stir-fry them. Both the crisp pod and the developing peas inside are eaten together.

The short bush habit makes this variety particularly useful for small vegetable gardens, raised beds and containers. Plants begin producing relatively early and require considerably less support than tall climbing peas, although a few short stakes or twiggy branches can help keep heavily laden plants upright.

Unlike snow peas, which are harvested while the pods are still flat, sugarsnaps are best picked once the pods become rounded and the peas inside are clearly developing, but while the entire pod remains crisp and tender. Regular harvesting encourages continued flowering and production.

Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, while edible-podded forms were later selected for their tender, sweet pods.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 120 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to autumn
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Spring, with autumn sowing possible in suitable areas

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart. As a short bush variety, plants require little support, although low pea netting, stakes or twiggy branches can help keep them upright as the crop develops.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.

Harvest when the pods are plump and full but still crisp and tender. Pick regularly to encourage continued production. For seed saving, leave selected pods on healthy plants until fully mature and dry.

Maturity: approximately 56–58 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
