Fragaria vesca

Rujana is a German heirloom alpine strawberry producing abundant crops of sweet, juicy red berries with the intense fragrance characteristic of wild strawberries. Also known as Fraises des Bois, the fruits are smaller than modern garden strawberries but exceptionally aromatic and richly flavoured.

Bred in Germany around 1920, Rujana was one of the early named selections of Fragaria vesca, the European woodland strawberry. Plants produce large white flowers followed by fruit over an extended season and form neat, compact clumps, making them particularly attractive in containers, hanging baskets and as edible garden edging.

The berries are excellent fresh, dry well and make beautifully fragrant jams and preserves. Both the fruit and leaves have also traditionally been used for herbal teas.

Approximately 70 seeds per packet.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April–July in cooler or elevated districts
Subtropics: March–August
Mild climates: February–September
Cold climates: August–November

Planting / Sowing

Sow very shallowly onto moist seed-raising mix, pressing the fine seed gently onto the surface with little or no covering. Keep consistently moist and in a bright position until germination, which can be slow and irregular.

Transplant seedlings once large enough to handle, spacing plants approximately 20–30 cm apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Grow in full sun in cooler climates or provide some afternoon protection in warmer areas. Keep evenly watered during flowering and fruiting.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
