Physalis philadelphica

Toma Verde is a classic green tomatillo producing firm, golf-ball-sized fruits enclosed in distinctive papery husks. The flavour is bright, fresh and pleasantly tangy, with the characteristic sharpness that makes tomatillos essential to salsa verde and many traditional Mexican sauces, soups and stews.

Native to Mexico and Central America, tomatillos have been cultivated since pre-Columbian times and were an important food crop of the Aztecs. Despite their resemblance to green tomatoes, they belong to the Physalis genus and are more closely related to cape gooseberries.

Plants are vigorous, spreading low and wide and can reach around 2 m across. Fruit is ready when it has filled the husk, which often begins to split, and may remain green when fully ripe. A short-lived perennial in warm, frost-free climates, it is generally grown as an annual elsewhere.

Seed count: approximately 1,200 seeds per gram.

Approximately 60 seeds per packet.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: March–September
Subtropics: August–February
Mild climates: September–January
Cold climates: October–December, after frost risk has passed

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5 mm deep into seed-raising mix and transplant once seedlings are established and conditions are warm. Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants approximately 60–100 cm apart to accommodate their spreading growth.

For reliable fruit set, grow at least two plants to allow cross-pollination. Provide support if required and keep consistently watered during flowering and fruit development. Harvest when fruits have filled their papery husks and the husks begin to split.

Maturity: approximately 68 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.

Not available for WA.
