Phaseolus vulgaris

A true blue heirloom, the Australian Butter Bean stands apart with its buttery yellow pods and glossy brown seeds, a striking contrast that hints at the richness within. This bean has been quietly passed down through generations of Australian home gardeners. Grown for drying or shelling fresh, the cooked beans are velvety, mild, and deeply satisfying, soaking up flavour beautifully in soups, stews, and slow cooked dishes. Heat tolerant and dependable, it is a rare gem for warm season growing and a nostalgic nod to traditional Australian kitchen gardens.

Approximately 15 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: September to March
Subtropics: October to February
Mild climates: Late spring to summer
Cold climates: After frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into warm, well drained soil in full sun once soil temperatures are consistently warm. Provide sturdy support for climbing plants. Space seeds to allow good airflow and keep soil evenly moist during establishment. Harvest pods for shelling fresh or allow beans to mature fully for drying.
