Medicago sativa

Aurora Lucerne is a vigorous and reliable perennial legume valued for rapid establishment, fine leafy growth and strong recovery after cutting or grazing. Widely grown for livestock grazing and high-quality hay production, it is equally valuable as a green manure, soil-improving crop and productive addition to mixed pastures.

Deep-rooted plants perform best in deep, well-drained soils, where their extensive root systems can help improve soil structure, access moisture deeper in the soil profile and contribute substantial organic matter. As a legume, Lucerne forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules, helping introduce biologically fixed nitrogen into the growing system.

Once established, Aurora has good tolerance to heat and dry periods and can respond rapidly following rainfall. Its soft purple flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, adding further value to farms, orchards and regenerative growing systems.

Young plants should be allowed to establish strongly before grazing. Avoid heavy grazing and do not graze below approximately 50 mm to allow sufficient foliage for plants to recover. Best performance is generally achieved around neutral soil pH, although Lucerne can grow across approximately pH 5–8. Annual rainfall requirements are around 375–500 mm, depending on soil and growing conditions.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn and spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring or early autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into a finely prepared, weed-free seedbed, covering seed approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep moist during establishment and avoid grazing or cutting until plants have developed a strong root system.

Lucerne performs best in full sun and deep, fertile, well-drained soil. For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Lucerne inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety. Not available for WA.
