Medicago sativa

Sequel Lucerne is a productive perennial variety with good winter activity, making it particularly valuable for maintaining growth and forage production through the cooler months. Its upright, erect growth habit makes it well-suited to hay production, yielding clean, high-quality cuts while also performing reliably in mixed pasture and grazing systems.

A hardy and practical variety, Sequel responds well to careful grazing and cutting management and has good regrowth potential when sufficient foliage is retained. Avoid cutting or grazing too close to ground level, allowing plants to maintain the reserves needed for vigorous recovery and continued production.

Sequel has good resistance to several common Lucerne diseases and aphids, contributing to its reliability and persistence in suitable growing conditions. Like other Lucernes, its deep root system allows established plants to access moisture from deeper in the soil profile, providing useful tolerance to dry periods while contributing organic matter and improving soil structure.

As a legume, Lucerne forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules, helping introduce biologically fixed nitrogen into the growing system. Its purple flowers are also highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn and spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring or early autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into a finely prepared, weed-free seedbed, covering seed approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep moist during establishment and avoid grazing or cutting until plants have developed a strong root system.

Grow in full sun in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Lucerne inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety. Not available for WA.
