A rare heirloom basil with exact origins unknown, though it has long been grown throughout Asia and Africa. Also known as American basil or hairy basil, it is closely related to lemon basil and is distinguished by its softly hairy stems. Intensely fragrant and more heat tolerant than sweet basil, this annual produces sweet white flowers and aromatic foliage through the warmer months.
Lime basil is valued for its culinary use as well as its ornamental appeal and natural insect repellent qualities. The essential oil extracted from the plant is widely used in soaps, candles, cosmetics, and aromatherapy, blending well with floral, spicy, and citrus oils.
