Lablab purpureus

Rongai Lab Lab is a vigorous, warm-season legume producing abundant growth and excellent ground cover. Grown as an annual in cooler regions and capable of persisting longer in warm, frost-free climates, it is particularly useful for green manure, cover cropping, forage and soil improvement.

Originally introduced from Kenya in 1962, Rongai is a brown-seeded variety producing attractive white flowers. It flowers later than Highworth and can continue flowering over several months where conditions remain warm and frost-free. Particularly well suited to well-drained coastal soils, its vigorous creeping growth quickly produces substantial biomass.

As a cover crop, Rongai helps suppress weeds, protect exposed soil and contribute valuable organic matter. Like other legumes, it forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules, helping introduce biologically fixed nitrogen into the growing system.

The young, immature pods are also traditionally eaten when thoroughly cooked. Mature and raw beans should not be eaten without appropriate preparation.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Late spring to summer
Cold climates: Late spring to early summer after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly after frost once the soil has warmed, approximately 20–30 mm deep. Allow plenty of room for plants to spread or provide support if you prefer to encourage climbing growth.

Grow in full sun in well-drained soil and keep moist during establishment. For green manure, allow plants to develop substantial foliage before cutting and leaving as surface mulch or incorporating into the soil.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Lab Lab inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
