Beta vulgaris

Bull's Blood Beetroot is a striking heirloom variety grown as much for its spectacular foliage as for its delicious roots. The deep red-purple leaves intensify in colour as they mature, making this one of the most popular varieties for baby leaf production, salad mixes and ornamental edible gardens. The young leaves have a rich earthy flavour and add dramatic colour to fresh salads and garnishes.

Equally rewarding as a root crop, Bull's Blood produces attractive dark red beets with distinctive internal zoning. Roots can be harvested young as tender baby beets or left to mature to full size. For the sweetest flavour and best texture, harvest roots while still relatively small, before they have a chance to become woody.

Fast growing and versatile, Bull's Blood can be harvested at multiple stages, providing baby leaves in as little as 35 days and mature roots in approximately 58 days. Its combination of ornamental beauty, flavour and productivity has made it a favourite among home gardeners, market growers and chefs alike.

Planting / Sowing

For baby leaf production, sow seed densely in trays, boxes or garden beds and harvest leaves when they reach 8–15 cm tall. For mature roots, sow seed directly into prepared soil 10–15 mm deep and thin seedlings to 10 cm apart. Beetroot dislikes root disturbance and performs best when direct sown.

Seeds benefit from soaking in warm water for a few hours before planting to encourage more even germination. Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil and keep evenly moist throughout the growing period.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
