Ammi majus

A graceful and elegant flowering annual prized for its large, lacy umbels of pure white blooms. Often called Bishop's Flower, False Queen Anne's Lace or Laceflower, Ammi majus closely resembles the familiar Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota) but is generally considered a more garden-friendly alternative. Unlike Daucus carota, Ammi produces entirely white flower heads without the characteristic central dark floret and is not regarded as a troublesome weed.

A member of the Apiaceae family, this easy-to-grow plant creates clouds of delicate flowers held above fine, fern-like foliage, bringing movement, softness and structure to garden beds. It is highly valued as a cut flower, both fresh and dried, with excellent vase life at flowering and seed stages alike. Reaching 1–2 metres in height, plants can be maintained at around 1 metre by pinching or removing the central leading stem. Drought tolerant once established and highly attractive to bees, hoverflies and other beneficial insects, Ammi is an outstanding pollinator plant and readily self-sows to return year after year.

Historically, Ammi majus has been used in Indian cuisine as an aromatic spice and has a long history of traditional medicinal use. Today it is most widely grown as an ornamental garden plant, cut flower and pollinator attractant.

Approximately 300 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring after frost has passed

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly where plants are to grow or raise in trays and transplant carefully while young. Cover lightly with soil and keep moist during germination. Position in full sun for best flowering, though plants will tolerate light shade. Space approximately 30–40cm apart. Once established, Ammi is relatively drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. Deadhead for extended flowering or allow seed heads to mature for self-sowing and dried arrangements.
