Momordica charantia

Jounpuri Bitter Melon is a vigorous and highly productive climbing vine producing abundant crops of small, warty fruits measuring approximately 10–14 cm in length. Growing to around 5 metres, this traditional variety is well suited to trellises, fences and other supports where its rapid growth can be accommodated.

Widely grown throughout Asia, Bitter Melon is valued both as a vegetable and for its long history of use in traditional food cultures. The immature fruits are commonly used in curries, stir-fries, soups and stuffed dishes, where their distinctive bitter flavour becomes milder when cooked. Young shoots and leaves may also be harvested and cooked as a leafy green.

A warm-season crop, Jounpuri thrives in hot, humid conditions and rewards gardeners with heavy harvests throughout summer and autumn. Regular picking encourages continued flowering and fruit production.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 15–20 mm deep in a warm, frost-free position once soil temperatures have warmed. Germination can be improved by soaking seed in warm water overnight before planting. Space plants 60–90 cm apart and provide a strong trellis or support structure for climbing.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Water regularly during flowering and fruit development and feed periodically with a balanced organic fertiliser. Harvest fruits while still young and green for the best texture and flavour.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
