A vigorous and beautiful perennial climbing legume prized for its striking deep blue flowers and versatility in the kitchen. Also known as Pigeonwings, Cordofan or Darwin Pea, this tropical species produces an abundance of vivid blooms throughout the warmer months, making it both an ornamental and productive addition to the garden.
The flowers are widely used throughout Asia to create naturally blue herbal teas, desserts, rice dishes and food colourings. The colour changes dramatically with the addition of citrus, shifting from blue to purple. Young pods are also edible and can be harvested while tender. As a legume, Butterfly Pea helps improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and attracts bees and other beneficial insects to the garden.
Thriving in warm conditions, it tolerates a wide range of soil types and performs particularly well through hot, humid summers. Given support, plants quickly cover trellises, fences and arches with lush growth and masses of flowers.

Planting / Sowing
Scarify seed lightly between sheets of sandpaper and soak overnight in warm water before sowing. Sow directly into well-drained soil or into pots 1–2cm deep. Position in full sun and keep moist during germination and establishment. Provide a trellis, fence or other support structure for climbing. Plants are drought tolerant once established but flower most prolifically with regular watering during dry periods.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
