Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis

Shanghai Pak Choi is a compact, dwarf Chinese cabbage variety prized for its attractive light green stems, dark green leaves and exceptional uniformity. Compared with many traditional pak choi types, it produces more consistent plants, making it a favourite for both home gardeners and market growers.

This versatile variety offers excellent tolerance to heat, humidity and cold conditions, allowing it to perform reliably across a wide range of climates. It is also slow to bolt, maintaining quality even when weather conditions become less than ideal. The crisp stems and tender leaves have a mild, sweet flavour that is perfect for stir-fries, soups, steaming and fresh salads when harvested young.

Fast growing and highly productive, Shanghai Pak Choi reaches maturity in just 40–50 days. Its sturdy stems and good keeping qualities also make it well suited to harvesting, handling and transport.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 5 mm deep directly into prepared garden beds or into seedling trays for transplanting. Space plants 20–30 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. Sow every few weeks for a continuous supply throughout the growing season.

Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive soil enriched with compost. Keep plants consistently watered to encourage rapid growth and tender stems. Harvest whole plants from 40–50 days after sowing or pick outer leaves as required.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
