Brassica oleracea var. capitata

Golden Acre is a classic early cabbage producing compact, round, tightly packed green heads weighing up to approximately 1.6 kg. One of the earliest traditional round-headed varieties, it is particularly useful for gardeners wanting a relatively quick crop and performs well for summer production in cooler climates.

The crisp, tender leaves have a mild, sweet cabbage flavour and are versatile in the kitchen. Enjoy finely shredded raw in salads and coleslaw, fermented into sauerkraut, or cooked in stir-fries, soups, braises and other vegetable dishes.

Compact and reliable, Golden Acre is particularly useful in smaller gardens and for closer plantings than larger cabbage varieties. Plants perform best in full sun with rich, fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture, particularly while heads are forming.

Approximately 250 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to winter
Mild climates: Early spring and autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep consistently moist during germination and establishment.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 35–45 cm apart in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Maintain regular moisture as heads develop and harvest when heads feel firm and well formed.

If saving seed, remember that cabbage will cross-pollinate readily with other compatible Brassica oleracea varieties, so adequate isolation is required to maintain the variety true to type.

Maturity: approximately 58–78 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
