Brassica oleracea var. costata

Tronchuda, also known as Portuguese Cabbage or Portugal Summer, is a traditional loose-leaf cabbage grown for its broad green leaves and distinctive thick, white midribs. Rather than forming a tight head, plants develop an open rosette of substantial leaves that can be harvested individually over an extended period.

The large, tender leaves have a mild, sweet cabbage flavour and are particularly good for cabbage rolls, soups, stews and braised dishes. The thick white stems and midribs are a vegetable in their own right, remaining tender, juicy and succulent when cooked. Although sometimes described as a kale, Tronchuda has a flavour and texture much closer to cabbage.

This Portuguese heirloom is closely associated with traditional caldo verde and other Portuguese vegetable dishes. Plants are vigorous and productive, with the loose-leaf habit allowing gardeners to pick outer leaves as required while leaving the centre to continue growing.

More tolerant of warmth than many tightly headed cabbages, Tronchuda is a useful variety for extending cabbage production into warmer conditions. It performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture.

Approximately 170 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring to summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep consistently moist during germination and establishment.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 40–50 cm apart in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Harvest the large outer leaves individually as required, leaving the central growing point intact to continue producing.

If saving seed, remember that Tronchuda will cross-pollinate readily with other compatible Brassica oleracea varieties, so adequate isolation is required to maintain the variety true to type.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
