Daucus carota subsp. sativus

Cosmic Purple is a striking Carrot producing slender roots approximately 15 cm long with intensely purple skin surrounding a contrasting orange interior, sometimes developing a bright yellow core. Sliced into rounds, the dramatic layers of colour make this an especially beautiful variety for fresh dishes.

The purple colouring comes from naturally occurring anthocyanins, antioxidant pigments also found in foods such as blueberries, blackberries and purple cabbage. The roots are crisp and sweet with a slightly spicy carrot flavour and are excellent eaten raw, grated into salads, pickled or used as a colourful garnish. They can also be roasted, steamed or added to cooked dishes, although some of the vivid purple colouring may soften during cooking.

Cosmic Purple performs best in full sun with loose, friable, well-drained soil free from stones and fresh manure. The relatively short roots also make it a good choice for raised beds and larger containers.

Seed count: approximately 850 seeds/g
Approximately 150 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Most of the year, with best results autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 2–5 cm apart once established, using young thinnings as baby carrots. Maintain even moisture as roots develop to encourage tender, evenly shaped carrots.

Maturity: approximately 70 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
