Peppermint Stick is a striking red-stemmed Celery producing crisp, colourful stalks with richly flavoured leaves. The stems develop beautiful pink-red to deep red colouring, particularly as plants mature, creating an unusual and attractive alternative to traditional green celery.
Both the stalks and leaves have a strong, aromatic celery flavour. The crisp stems can be eaten fresh, chopped into salads, added to soups and stews or used as the base for stocks and sauces. The intensely flavoured leaves are particularly useful as a seasoning and can be added to soups, stocks, herb salts and other savoury dishes.
Native to the Mediterranean region, celery has a long history of both food and medicinal use. It was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans and was gradually developed into the fleshy-stemmed vegetable we recognise today through European cultivation. Celery seed also has a long history in Western herbal medicine, particularly as a diuretic and for its traditional use in gout, rheumatic complaints and urinary conditions.
Peppermint Stick is slow to bolt and prefers cool growing conditions. Like all celery, it has a shallow root system and needs rich soil, generous feeding and consistent moisture to develop succulent, crisp stalks. Individual outer stems can be harvested as required while leaving the centre of the plant to continue growing.
Seed count: approximately 2,100–3,000 seeds/g
Approximately 300 seeds per packet
When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring and autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early summer
Planting / Sowing
Sow the fine seed into trays or punnets, pressing gently onto the surface of moist seed-raising mix and covering only very lightly. Keep consistently moist during germination.
Transplant seedlings once sturdy, spacing approximately 20–30 cm apart in rich, well-manured soil. Keep plants well watered throughout growth and do not allow the shallow root zone to dry out.
For paler, milder stems, blanch by mounding mulch around the stalks or enclosing them with cardboard or another light-excluding material as they approach maturity. Harvest individual outer stalks as required or cut the entire plant at the base.
Maturity: approximately 80–85 days.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
