Matricaria chamomilla

One of the world's most treasured medicinal herbs, German Chamomile produces masses of delicate daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centres and finely divided, feathery foliage. This charming annual grows quickly to around 40–60cm and brings both beauty and usefulness to the garden.

The fragrant flowers have been used for centuries to make soothing herbal teas traditionally taken to support relaxation, restful sleep and nervous system wellbeing. The blooms contain a distinctive blue essential oil, prized in herbal medicine and natural skincare preparations.

Often referred to as the "plant's physician", chamomile has long been valued by gardeners for its beneficial relationship with neighbouring plants. A tea made from the flowers and foliage has traditionally been used around seedlings, while the plant itself is believed to support the health and vigour of nearby herbs and vegetables.

The flowers can be harvested fresh or dried for tea, skincare preparations and traditional hair rinses used to brighten fair hair.

Tropics: April to August
Subtropics: March to September
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring and summer

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed on the surface of moist soil and press down gently, as light assists germination. Do not cover seed. Chamomile prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil. Keep moist during germination. Plants may be direct sown or started in trays and transplanted carefully. Space plants approximately 20–30cm apart. Harvest flowers regularly to encourage continued blooming throughout the season. Approximately 8–12 weeks to first flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
