Dactylis glomerata

Savvy Cocksfoot is a hardy, upright perennial grass valued for its persistence, strong root system and ability to perform across a range of conditions, including moderately acidic and lower-fertility soils. As a green manure and cover crop, it produces substantial fibrous root growth and leafy biomass, helping protect bare soil, reduce erosion, suppress weeds and build organic matter.

Its dense root system is particularly useful for improving soil structure and holding soil together, making Savvy a good choice for longer-term cover cropping, orchards, pathways and areas where a persistent living ground cover is preferred. Unlike legume green manures, Cocksfoot does not fix nitrogen, but it pairs well with legumes such as clover, lucerne or vetch in mixed green manure plantings.

A reliable perennial pasture species, it can also be grazed or cut periodically and will regrow from the established crown. Allowing cut material to remain on the soil provides additional organic matter and surface protection.

Seed count: approximately 440 seeds/g

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn
Subtropics: Autumn and spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring or early autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow into prepared soil in autumn or spring, broadcasting evenly and lightly raking seed into the surface. Keep moist during germination and establishment, irrigating where rainfall is insufficient.

For green manure, cut periodically to encourage fresh growth and leave the cut material on the surface as mulch. For incorporation, cut before the plants become overly coarse and allow the organic matter to break down before planting the following crop.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
