Dahlia variabilis

Unwins Mix, also known as Hi Dolly, is a cheerful, compact Dahlia producing an abundant mixture of single to semi-double flowers in shades of rose, orange, yellow, crimson, purple and brick red. The varied colours and flower forms create a lively display from late spring through to the first frosts.

Ideal for garden beds, borders, containers and cutting gardens, the compact plants are easy to manage and produce plenty of stems for fresh flower arrangements. Regular picking or deadheading encourages continued flowering throughout the warmer months.

Usually grown as an annual, Dahlias can also be treated as tender perennials in frost-free climates. Plants prefer full sun, fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture during active growth and flowering.

Seed count: approximately 140 seeds/g
Approximately 80 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to spring
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Spring to early summer
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow into trays or pots approximately 5 mm deep and keep warm and moist during germination. In colder areas, seed can be started indoors several weeks before the last expected frost.

Transplant once seedlings are established and frost risk has passed, spacing approximately 20–25 cm apart. Grow in full sun, keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, and feed lightly during flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
