Anethum graveolens

Mammoth Dill is a tall, aromatic annual growing to around 90 cm, prized for its abundant feathery foliage and large seed heads. Its hollow stems, marked with distinctive green and white striping, support generous umbels of yellow flowers that attract bees and other beneficial insects. A favourite in the kitchen garden, Mammoth Dill is grown for both its fresh leaves and sweet, aromatic seeds, which are widely used to flavour seafood, potatoes, salads, sauces, pickles and vinegars.

Traditionally, dill seeds have been used in herbal medicine to support healthy digestion and were also regarded as a gentle calmative. The plant is a natural source of minerals including potassium, sodium, sulphur and phosphorus. In the vegetable garden, Mammoth Dill is a useful companion plant for cabbages and other brassicas, helping to attract beneficial predatory insects.

Planting / Sowing

Direct sow seed 5–10 mm deep into fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Dill develops a taproot and is best sown where it is to grow. Space plants 20–30 cm apart and keep the soil evenly moist during establishment. Harvest fresh leaves from around 60 days, or allow plants to mature for harvesting the aromatic seeds.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
