Dracocephalum moldavica

Dragonhead, also known as Moldavian Balm, is a charming annual herb native to parts of Asia and Eastern Europe. It produces spikes of striking blue, nectar-rich flowers above aromatic green foliage, releasing a refreshing citrus fragrance when brushed. Traditionally enjoyed as a fragrant herbal tea and used in traditional herbal medicine, Dragonhead also makes an attractive ornamental plant that brings colour and scent to the garden.

Highly valued by beekeepers and gardeners alike, Dragonhead is an exceptional pollinator plant, attracting honeybees, native bees and a wide range of beneficial insects, including Australia's beautiful blue-banded bees. Its long flowering period makes it a valuable addition to cottage gardens, herb gardens and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: September to November
Cold climates: October to December after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 3–5 mm deep into well-drained soil in a sunny position. Seeds may be direct sown or started in trays and transplanted once established. Space plants 25–30 cm apart and water regularly during dry periods. Remove spent flowers to encourage a longer flowering season or allow seed heads to mature for seed saving.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
