Echinacea angustifolia

A hardy North American prairie perennial valued for its long history of traditional herbal use and attractive summer flowers. Plants form narrow, upright grey-green leaves and produce soft rose-pink, cone-shaped blooms that attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects. Slower growing than Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia is often regarded as the more potent medicinal species and is particularly prized for its roots.

Plants thrive in full sun and very well-drained soils, preferring the drier conditions of their native prairie habitat. Cold stratification greatly improves germination, making this species well worth the extra preparation for gardeners interested in growing their own medicinal herbs.

Traditionally, the roots have been used to support healthy immune function and are generally harvested after two to three years, once they have fully developed. The leaves and flowers may also be used in teas and tinctures, although the roots remain the most valued medicinal part. While Echinacea has a long history of traditional use, modern clinical studies suggest it may help reduce the duration of some upper respiratory tract infections, although results vary depending on the preparation used.

Planting / Sowing

For best germination, refrigerate seed at approximately 5°C for 2–4 weeks before sowing. Surface sow or cover lightly with no more than 2–3 mm of fine seed-raising mix, as light assists germination. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, with temperatures between 18–22°C. Transplant seedlings into a sunny, well-drained position, spacing plants 30–45 cm apart. Avoid heavy, poorly drained soils, particularly over winter.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
