Dianella caerulea

Dianella caerulea, commonly known as Blue Flax Lily, is a hardy Australian native perennial with attractive blue-green, grass-like foliage. Widely used in Australian gardens and public landscaping, it is valued for its toughness, adaptability and ability to grow in areas where many other plants struggle.

In spring and summer, slender stems rise above the foliage carrying delicate blue to purple star-shaped flowers with prominent yellow stamens. These are followed by striking glossy blue to purple berries, providing interest well beyond the flowering season.

Plants gradually form dense clumps and are well suited to native gardens, borders, mass plantings and areas beneath established trees. Highly adaptable, Blue Flax Lily grows in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a range of soil types, including relatively dry and shaded positions once established.

Approximately 25 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to spring
Subtropics: Autumn and spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow into trays or pots using a well-drained seed-raising mix, covering seed lightly. Keep moist but not waterlogged. Dianella seed can be slow and irregular to germinate, so patience is required.

Transplant once seedlings are well established into full sun or partial shade. Water regularly while young; established plants are hardy and require relatively little maintenance.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
