Viola tricolor

Heartsease, also known as Wild Pansy or Johnny Jump-Up, is a charming, generously flowering plant producing masses of small tri-coloured blooms, typically combining violet, yellow and cream. Growing to approximately 20 cm tall, the compact plants bring cheerful colour to cottage gardens, borders, containers and beneath taller plants.

The dainty flowers have a long history in European gardens and are also edible, making a beautiful garnish for cakes, salads, desserts and drinks. Left in the garden, they provide a useful source of food for bees and other pollinating insects.

Hardy and easy to grow, Heartsease performs particularly well during the cooler months and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. In favourable conditions it will readily self-seed, appearing again in unexpected corners of the garden.

Seed count: approximately 1,400 seeds/g
Approximately 300 seeds per packet
Germination: approximately 10–20 days

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, covering seed lightly with soil or seed-raising mix. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 15–20 cm apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Regular picking or deadheading encourages continued flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
