Impatiens balsamina

Tom Thumb is a compact, dwarf Balsam producing a profusion of colourful flowers in shades of rose, salmon, scarlet, violet and white. Growing to approximately 20 cm tall, the neat, bushy plants flower generously through the warmer months until the first frost.

Its compact habit makes Tom Thumb particularly well suited to garden beds, borders, edging and containers, where the colourful blooms create a dense and cheerful display. Easy to grow and relatively quick to establish, it is a lovely choice for filling smaller spaces or planting in groups.

Impatiens prefers fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture and performs well in full sun in cooler conditions or partial shade in warmer climates. Plants are frost sensitive.

Seed count: approximately 100 seeds/g
Approximately 80 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Spring to summer
Cold climates: Late spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow into trays or pots, covering seed lightly with seed-raising mix. Keep warm and consistently moist during germination but avoid waterlogging.

Transplant once seedlings are established, spacing approximately 15–20 cm apart. Choose a sheltered position with good soil moisture and some afternoon shade in hotter climates.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
