Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum

Autumn Giant, also known as Elephant Leek, is a substantial traditional Leek producing long, thick white shafts with very little bulbing at the base. Valued for its size, quality and generous yields, it develops broad green leaves above a substantial tender stem.

Leeks have been cultivated since ancient times, with origins in the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean and a long history throughout Europe. They were grown by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans and later became particularly important in European cooking.

Autumn Giant has a mild, sweet onion flavour that becomes beautifully soft and mellow when cooked. The long white shafts are excellent in soups and stews, baked into pies and quiches, braised, roasted or sautéed with butter and herbs. Young, tender leeks can also be finely sliced into salads.

Leeks prefer deep, fertile soil enriched with plenty of organic matter. Unlike onions, they are grown for their elongated leaf bases rather than a bulb. Gradually hilling soil around the stems as they grow excludes light and produces the characteristic long, tender white shaft.

Seed count: approximately 350–450 seeds/g
Approximately 100 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to late summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5–10 mm deep into trays, seedbeds or directly into prepared soil. Keep consistently moist during germination.

When seedlings are approximately pencil thickness, transplant into deep holes around 15–20 cm apart. Plant deeply without burying the growing centre. As plants develop, gradually draw soil around the stems to increase the length of the blanched white shaft.

Grow in full sun in deep, rich, well-drained soil and maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing season.

Begin harvesting once stems reach approximately 2 cm thick, or leave plants longer to develop the substantial shafts for which Autumn Giant is known. Leeks can remain in the ground until required in suitable conditions and also store well refrigerated after harvest.

Maturity: approximately 105 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
