Lactuca sativa

Webb’s Wonderful is a classic Crisphead Lettuce producing large, substantial heads of sweet, dark green leaves surrounding a firm, crisp white heart. The outer leaves are attractively wrinkled and textured, while the interior develops the satisfying crunch for which this old variety is particularly valued.

The leaves have an excellent sweet flavour and crisp, succulent texture, making them ideal for salads, sandwiches, burgers and wraps. The firm inner heart is particularly good simply chopped and dressed, while the substantial outer leaves hold up well in mixed salads.

An old English variety dating from the 19th century, Webb’s Wonderful became a favourite with home gardeners for its impressive size, excellent flavour and reliability. Its resistance to premature bolting also gives it a longer harvesting window than many traditional heading lettuces.

Webb’s Wonderful performs well from spring and autumn sowings but is also an excellent summer variety, particularly where plants receive consistent moisture and some protection from extreme afternoon heat.

Lettuce is one of the world’s oldest cultivated salad vegetables, grown for thousands of years and spreading through the ancient Mediterranean world. Today its enormous diversity includes looseleaf, cos, butterhead and crisphead forms adapted to a wide range of climates and seasons.

Seed count: approximately 600–1,000 seeds/g
Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring; summer with some afternoon shade
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow shallowly, approximately 3–5 mm deep, directly into prepared soil or raise in trays for transplanting. Lettuce seed needs only a light covering and germinates best in cool to mild conditions.

Space plants approximately 25–30 cm apart to allow the large heads to develop fully. Grow in full sun during cooler weather, with some afternoon shade beneficial during hot conditions.

Keep soil consistently moist throughout growth, particularly while heads are forming. Regular watering encourages sweet, succulent leaves and helps reduce stress that can cause bitterness or premature bolting.

Harvest once heads are large and well developed with a firm, crisp heart, cutting cleanly at the base.

Maturity: approximately 64–87 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
