Lupinus albus

Murringo, also known as Luxor, is a vigorous white lupin grown as a high-protein pulse, stockfeed and valuable cool-season green manure crop. Fast growing and well suited to medium to high rainfall areas, it produces substantial leafy growth followed by attractive white flowers.

As a legume, Murringo forms a symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil bacteria, fixing atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules. Its strong growth and substantial biomass make it useful for building organic matter, improving soil fertility and incorporating into crop rotations.

The protein-rich seed is widely used for livestock feed and can also be processed for human consumption, including milling into flour and producing flakes and other lupin-based foods. Only appropriately processed low-alkaloid lupin seed should be consumed.

Murringo will cross-pollinate with other Lupinus albus varieties. When growing for seed purity, maintain an isolation distance of approximately 1 km from other flowering white lupin varieties.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Generally not suited to hot, humid conditions
Subtropics: Autumn
Mild climates: Autumn, ideally April to May
Cold climates: Autumn to early winter

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil in full sun, approximately 2–4 cm deep. Murringo performs best when established during the cooler months with adequate soil moisture.

For green manure, cut at or around flowering before mature seed develops and leave the growth on the surface as mulch or incorporate it into the soil.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Lupin inoculant (Type G) where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.
