Lupinus polyphyllus

Russell Mix is a spectacular perennial Lupin producing tall, densely packed flower spikes in a beautiful mixture of pink shades, ranging from soft blush through to deep rose. The impressive blooms rise above attractive palmate foliage, bringing height and structure to cottage gardens, borders and mass plantings.

Russell Lupins are classic cool-climate garden plants and make excellent cut flowers, while their abundant pea-like blooms are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. As members of the legume family, Lupins are also able to form nitrogen-fixing relationships with soil bacteria.

Plants perform best in cooler conditions with full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil. They can struggle in areas with prolonged hot, humid summers.

Seed count: approximately 60 seeds/g
Approximately 20 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Generally not suited to tropical climates
Subtropics: Late summer to autumn in cooler areas
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Late summer to autumn, or spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, as Lupins develop a substantial taproot and prefer minimal root disturbance. Sow approximately 1–2 cm deep and keep moist during germination.

The hard seed coat can slow germination. Soaking seed overnight before sowing can help encourage more even germination. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.
