Malva sylvestris mauritiana

Mauritanian Mallow is a striking, old-fashioned mallow producing large violet-purple flowers dramatically marked with deep purple veining. Growing into a tall, bushy plant, it brings abundant colour to cottage gardens, herb gardens, wildflower plantings and informal borders.

A biennial or short-lived perennial, this vigorous mallow flowers generously over an extended period and is highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. The flowers and young leaves are edible, while the plant also has a long history of traditional herbal use. Like other mallows, the leaves and flowers contain soothing mucilage.

Easy to grow and adaptable, Mauritanian Mallow performs best in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Regular picking or deadheading encourages continued flowering, or allow selected seed heads to mature for self-seeding.
