Reseda odorata

Machet is an old-fashioned annual Mignonette treasured for its wonderfully sweet, spicy fragrance. The slender flower spikes carry clusters of small, understated greenish-cream flowers, making this a plant grown more for its remarkable perfume than showy colour.

Long cultivated in cottage and perfume gardens, fragrant Mignonette flowers have traditionally been used in perfumery and for their aromatic oils, while Reseda species also have a history of use as natural yellow dyes. Plant near paths, windows, entrances or outdoor sitting areas where the fragrance can be appreciated.

Machet grows well in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soil. It performs particularly well in mild conditions and can be succession sown for a longer flowering season.

Seed count: approximately 750 seeds/g
Approximately 500 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, covering seed lightly with soil. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

Thin seedlings to approximately 15–20 cm apart in full sun to partial shade. Avoid disturbing established plants unnecessarily and succession sow every few weeks if a longer supply of fragrant flowers is desired.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
