Brassica carinata

Carinata Mustard is a fast-growing forage brassica particularly valued as a green manure and biofumigation crop. Research has demonstrated the potential of brassica green manures to help suppress some soil-borne pathogens and plant-parasitic nematodes, making Carinata a useful rotation crop before susceptible vegetables and cereals.

The biofumigation effect occurs when the plant material is finely chopped and incorporated into moist soil. As the brassica tissue breaks down, naturally occurring glucosinolates are converted into biologically active compounds that can help suppress certain soil pests and pathogens. Its vigorous growth also provides good ground coverage, adds organic matter and can assist with weed suppression.

Carinata can be slashed and allowed to regrow before final incorporation, helping produce additional biomass. It can be grown alone or included in green manure mixtures and is particularly useful in temperate growing systems. For ongoing rotation management, it can be replanted approximately every two years where appropriate.

Grows to approximately 20 cm
1 kg covers approximately 1,000 m²

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring and autumn

Planting / Sowing

Broadcast evenly over prepared soil and lightly rake seed into the surface. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

For maximum biofumigation benefit, slash or finely chop plants while actively growing, ideally around flowering, and immediately incorporate the fresh material into the top layer of moist soil. Water after incorporation and allow the material time to break down before planting the following crop.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety. Not available for WA.
