Abelmoschus esculentus

Hill Country Red is a distinctive heirloom Okra producing short, plump green pods beautifully streaked and striated with red. The colouring continues through the plant, with attractive reddish stems and veins making this a particularly ornamental addition to the summer vegetable garden.

The pods are best harvested young, at approximately 7–10 cm long, while they remain tender and succulent. They have a mild, pleasant flavour and substantial texture, making them excellent fried, grilled, roasted or pickled, or added to curries, soups, stews and gumbo.

Hill Country Red is an old variety associated with the Texas Hill Country in the United States. Its combination of striking colour, heat tolerance and productive growth reflects the kind of locally adapted vegetable variety maintained through generations of home gardening.

Okra itself has ancient origins in Africa, with Ethiopia and the surrounding region frequently associated with its early history. From Africa it spread through the Middle East, India and the Mediterranean before becoming an important vegetable throughout tropical and subtropical cuisines around the world.

Plants are upright, vigorous and productive, thriving through hot summer conditions when many other vegetables struggle. The large, hibiscus-like flowers are followed quickly by pods, and regular harvesting encourages plants to continue flowering and producing.

Seed count: approximately 16 seeds/g
Approximately 20 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Late spring to early summer
Cold climates: Start indoors in spring and transplant after all danger of frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 15–20 mm deep directly into warm, well-prepared soil after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler districts, seed can be started indoors to extend the growing season.

Space plants approximately 40–60 cm apart in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Maintain consistent moisture during establishment, flowering and pod development, although established plants tolerate hot conditions particularly well.

Harvest pods regularly while young and tender, ideally at approximately 7–10 cm long. Check plants frequently during warm weather, as pods develop quickly and become increasingly fibrous if left to mature.

Allow pods to mature and dry completely on the plant when growing for seed.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
