Pisum sativum

Golden Podded is a striking old heirloom Pea producing brilliant golden-yellow pods on vigorous climbing vines reaching approximately 2 m tall. Purple-tinged flowers appear before the colourful pods, making this an unusually ornamental as well as productive vegetable.

The young pods are tender and sweet and can be eaten whole, either raw or lightly cooked much like a snow pea. Their golden colour makes them particularly attractive in salads and stir-fries. Leave the pods to mature and the peas inside can be shelled and eaten fresh, or allowed to dry completely for use as a dried pea.

Thought to have originated in India, Golden Podded is an old variety with a long history of cultivation. Its combination of yellow pods, coloured flowers and dual-purpose harvest makes it quite different from the familiar green garden pea.

Peas themselves are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, with tender green peas becoming popular much later.

Golden Podded is a vigorous climber and benefits from a sturdy trellis or other support. Climbing peas generally provide an extended harvest, particularly when pods are picked regularly.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 15 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to autumn
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Spring, with autumn sowing possible in suitable areas

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart and provide a strong trellis, netting or other climbing support. Vines can reach around 2 m tall.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a wide range of soil types but perform poorly in waterlogged conditions. Keep consistently moist during flowering and pod development.

Harvest the golden pods young and flat for eating whole. Pick regularly to encourage continued production. For shelling peas, allow pods to fill before harvesting. For dried peas or seed saving, leave pods on the vine until fully mature and dry.

We cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania.
